Big Days & Big Growth

Note from the Director

Welcome to September! Are you ready to celebrate?

The West Pittston Library moved into its current building in 1922. That’s 100 years ago! The original founding of the library was on September 12th, 1873. That means next year will be our 150th birthday!

We started with two shelves in the post office and have grown to nearly 40,000 items: books, movies, periodicals, games, and reference materials. And let’s not forget 24,000 digital items, including e-books, newspaper archives, and research databases. Could we have imagined a century and a half ago that we’d have computers, a fax and copy machine, printers, and iPads, all for public use?

Our educational and informational programs are unsurpassed in the area. From SAT prep classes to technical help for seniors, Kindergarten Readiness to STEM programs, gardening help to nature walks, we are proud of our place in the educational and recreational life of West Pittston and the surrounding area.

Our community partnerships include the services of all ten county libraries and their branches through the Luzerne County Library System. We host blood drives with the American Red Cross, local historical society events, and author talks. We work with schools and daycares, local officials and businesses.

149 years, and we’re still growing! Ahead of us are exciting opportunities, and, as always, we invite you to grow with us. Donations have been a bit behind this year, and expenses have been higher than normal for all of us, so we ask that you give what you can, and participate with us where possible. You might even ask a friend if they would support the West Pittston Library!

We’re grateful for what you’ve done and what you will do. Sometime between now and September 12, please stop by and wish us a happy birthday, and come join us for the Friends of the Library’s Books & Brews event on October 11th (more details in the newsletter!). The more participation with, and yes, financial support to the WPL, the better we are able to serve you and the community we love. Thanks again, and see you soon!

Gratefully yours,
David J. Bauman
Library Director
